A traditional wood carving and lacquer work training programme was officially launched in Thulhaadhoo on 22 February 2016, providing an opportunity for local participants to learn and develop skills rooted in one of the island’s most valued cultural traditions.

The programme brought together 30 participants, with 28 successfully completing the training held for a period of 3 weeks. Participants received practical training in traditional wood carving techniques alongside lacquer work from craftsmen of Thulhaadhoo, gaining skills that could be further developed into income-generating opportunities while contributing to the preservation of Maldivian craftsmanship.

Thulhaadhoo has long been recognised for its distinctive traditional lacquer craftsmanship, an important part of the island’s cultural identity and heritage. However, the practice was increasingly being carried out by the older generation, raising concerns about the transfer of these traditional skills to younger people. The training programme therefore provided an important platform for passing on knowledge and encouraging a new generation to take an interest in the craft.

The programme concluded with a mini exhibition showcasing products created by the participants. The exhibition celebrated their achievements and provided an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they had acquired during the training.

Through initiatives such as this, traditional knowledge and craftsmanship can be passed from one generation to the next, helping to safeguard Thulhaadhoo’s unique cultural heritage while creating opportunities for local livelihoods.
