At its Board Meeting held on 28 January 2019, the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund (BACF) approved an allocation of MVR 3,000,000 under the second cycle of the BACF Grants Programme to support the development of two-bedroom apartments across all 13 inhabited islands of Baa Atoll.

The initiative was designed to create tangible and lasting community assets, while establishing sustainable revenue-generating opportunities for Island Councils and local communities.

As part of the initiative, the Baa Atoll Council committed to matching the BACF grant allocation and agreed to  serve as the main focal point for coordinating, overseeing, implementation and monitoring of the 13 development projects.

The initiative has since been successfully completed, with two-bedroom apartments constructed on all 13 inhabited islands of Baa Atoll. The completed apartments are now being utilised as revenue-generating community assets, providing a direct and sustainable source of income for the respective Island Councils and local communities.

The project demonstrates how BACF grants can extend beyond conservation activities to support community development, sustainable livelihoods and local economic opportunities across the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve.

By investing in long-term community assets across all 13 inhabited islands, the initiative has created a lasting legacy of the BACF Grants Programme and demonstrates the Fund’s commitment to supporting conservation, sustainable development and community well-being throughout Baa Atoll.

The initiative has since been successfully completed, with two-bedroom apartments constructed on all 13 inhabited islands of Baa Atoll. The completed apartments are now being utilised as revenue-generating assets, providing a direct and sustainable source of income for island communities through their respective Island Councils.
