The story behind the proposed monument dates back to an incident that occurred on Kudarikilu during World War I, in 1915. The monument is intended to commemorate the lives lost in the tragic explosion.

According to one version of the story, a fishing vessel from Kudarikilu came across a drifting mine at sea. Unaware of what the object was, the islanders brought it ashore. The tragedy occurred on a Friday while some children were playing on the beach. One of the children accidentally tampered with the object, causing it to explode and resulting in the loss of lives.

Construction of the monument began in early July 2015 and was originally expected to be completed within six months. However, the project was delayed and was subsequently expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2018.

The project was divided into three phases. The first phase involved clearing the site, while the second phase focused on completing the boundary wall. Both of these phases have been completed. The third and final phase involves completing the monument structure itself, following the completion of the boundary wall works.

The Kudarikilu Council intends to develop the monument as a tourist attraction and create livelihood opportunities around the historical story of the explosion. The site could provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about an important chapter in the island’s history while supporting local economic activities.

Work on the project has been on hold due to various challenges. Discussions have now been initiated wit te Island Council to address the outstanding issues and move forward with completing the monument.
