Representatives of the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office and the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund recently met with the newly elected Presidents and Council members of Baa Kendhoo, Dharavandhoo, Kihaadhoo, Maalhos, Kudarikilu, Kamadhoo, and Dhonfanu Councils to strengthen collaboration and reaffirm their shared commitment to the conservation and sustainable development of Baa Atoll.

As key partners in the management of the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, Island Councils play a vital role in supporting conservation initiatives, facilitating community engagement, and promoting sustainable practices at the local level. The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss priority areas for cooperation and to explore ways of enhancing collaboration between the Biosphere Reserve Office, the Conservation Fund, and local authorities.

Discussions focused on the conservation and sustainable management of protected areas of Baa Atoll and the wider Biosphere Reserve, while also highlighting the importance of working closely with communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community groups, and other stakeholders. Participants emphasized that effective conservation can only be achieved through strong partnerships and active community participation.

The meetings also explored opportunities to develop strategic partnerships that raise public awareness, strengthen environmental stewardship, support community-led initiatives, and promote sustainable development across the atoll. Particular attention was given to identifying areas where Island Councils can work alongside the Biosphere Reserve Office to deliver conservation programmes, environmental education activities, and initiatives that benefit local communities.

These engagements mark an important step in strengthening partnerships with Island Councils and ensuring a coordinated approach to the management of the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve as Baa Atoll Council has ceased to exist. Through continued collaboration, the Biosphere Reserve Office, the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund, and Island Councils aim to safeguard the ecological, social, and economic values of the Biosphere Reserve for present and future generations.

The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office looks forward to working closely with all Island Councils and stakeholders in advancing a shared vision of conservation, sustainability, and community well-being throughout Baa Atoll.

BR Office is scheduled to visit and meet with the respective Council members of  Hithaadhoo,Thulhaadhoo, Goidhoo, Fulahdhoo and Fehnedhoo late July.
