Today marks the 15th anniversary of the inscription of Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives. This milestone celebrates fifteen years of collaborative conservation efforts, sustainable development, and community stewardship that have made Baa Atoll a globally recognized model for balancing biodiversity conservation with human well-being.

On 28 June 2011, during the 23rd Session of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) International Coordinating Council held in Dresden, Germany, the entire Baa Atoll was officially designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The designation coincided with the 40th anniversary of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme and represented a landmark achievement for the Maldives, placing Baa Atoll among a global network of sites dedicated to promoting harmonious relationships between people and nature.

Over the past fifteen years, the Biosphere Reserve has grown into a successful example of collaborative environmental management. Through strong partnerships among government institutions, local councils, communities, tourism operators, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, researchers, and international partners, significant progress has been made in conserving the atoll's internationally important marine and terrestrial ecosystems while promoting sustainable livelihoods and responsible development.

The designation has strengthened the conservation and management of Baa Atoll's exceptional biodiversity, including its coral reefs, mangroves, inhabited islands, protected areas including the world-renowned marine protected areas such as Hanifaru Bay. It has also fostered environmental education, scientific research, community engagement, sustainable tourism initiatives, and collaborative governance, demonstrating that conservation and socio-economic development can successfully complement one another.

The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government of Maldives, UNESCO, local councils, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, community groups, schools, researchers, tourism industry partners, development partners, and, above all, the people of Baa Atoll. Their vision, commitment, and continued support have been instrumental in transforming the Biosphere Reserve designation into a living example of sustainable development.

As Baa Atoll commemorates this important milestone, it also looks ahead to the future. Emerging challenges, including climate change, marine pollution, habitat degradation, and increasing development pressures, highlight the importance of strengthening partnerships and continuing collective efforts to conserve the atoll's unique natural and cultural heritage.

Reflecting on the achievements of the past fifteen years, the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office reaffirms its commitment to working alongside communities and partners to ensure that Baa Atoll remains a place where biodiversity is protected, sustainable livelihoods flourish, and future generations continue to benefit from its extraordinary natural heritage.
